Am I blind or where did the hundreds of Joomla templates go? I only see 5 pages worth now

All of the Joomla templates that were in the old download system were removed. The process of adding them all to the new download system is going to begin very soon and there will be thousands of Joomla templates to choose from. Plus, they will all be tagged with useful information that was not available in the old system so that it is easier to search for specific templates.

Great... I'm so glad to hear that. Not that I'm trying to rush you, but do you have an eta?

My friend is going to start adding the Joomla 1.0 templates very soon. These can also be used with Joomla 1.5 stable (which was just release recently) using the legacy plugin or by converting them to 1.5 compatible. I'll adding in some new 1.5 templates soon as well.

As an added note, you can subscribe to any specific download section with RSS using a feed reader or Live Bookmarks, which is built-in to Firefox. You will then be notified whenever a new entry is added to that section. The orange feed button to subscribe is in the top right area of the URL address bar and also below the listing.
